Looking for the software for the Sharp JX9200 Laser Printer?

You've found it!

Just download the following 3 zip files, unzip them onto 3 floppies, and run a:\setup (assuming a: is your floppy drive).

You could probably install from a temporary directory on your hard disk, but I've never tried.

Why have I bothered? Because it seems that a lot of people bought this printer, and if the original disks get corrupted/lost/whatever then you can't get replacements.

Hints, Tips and Moans...

The drivers are 16 bit drivers, so will work with Windows 3.x and Windows 95 (just about). They won't work with OS/2 Warp 3 or 4 in a Win-OS2 session, nor with WindowsNT. I've tried. I haven't tried with WINE under Linux yet, but I doubt they'll work.

On my desktop machine, the software disables APM, so it won't go into suspend mode. Also, if I unplug the printer from the parallel port then boot to Windows 95, the screen, keyboard and mouse freeze before Windows is properly started. On my laptop, however, this doesn't happen; just the APM is disabled. There is a way round it though...

The crucial line is in your win.ini file; load=WPSHRC.EXE. If you rem this line out then re-boot, everything should work normally. You just can't use your printer.

And all this from a printer that has the 'Designed for Microsoft Windows 95' logo on the front. Yeah, right.

Finally...

No doubt Sharp will try and sue me for making this driver software publicly available. Still, if Sharp won't help the users, then the users have to help each other.

I e-mailed Sharp UK telling them I'd like to try and build drivers for OS/2 and Linux, so could they send me technical details on the printer. Their reply was a resounding 'No'. Thanks Sharp.
